The Moleskine notebook, a modern day classic

The Moleskine is the original 'little black book'  used by European artists and thinkers for the past two centuries from Van Gogh to Picasso, Hemingway to Bruce Chatwin.

These notebooks are bound in cardboard, and the acid free paper pages are thread bound. They feature an elastic closure and an expandable 'secret' inner note holder made of cardboard and cloth.

The Moleskine notebook comes in two sizes - pocket with 192 lines pages and a larger size with 240 lined pages.

For years,  Moleskine production diminished and ceased, as bookbinders became rarer and rarer, and with their demise came the loss of the secrets of Moleskine production. In the 1990's however, an Italian company began to produce the classic black notebooks once again, much to the delight of literally millions of devotees.

What is it about these things - the look, the feel, their pure usefulness, their style? A mix of all these  elements perhaps, plus a few less tangible ones make this subtle little book so popular.
