Scratch Map® Poster Inspiration: Icelandlunchbox
From its mystical northern lights to its bustling nightlife, Iceland is one of Europe’s most unusual destinations – and everyone at Luckies HQ are desperate to mark it off their Scratch Map®. Take a look at just a few of the country’s most impressive offerings…
Blue Lagoon, Iceland.
No trip to Iceland would be complete without taking a dip in The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa that sits against a backdrop of black lava fields and snow-capped mountains. Sit back and relax in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the lagoon, before slipping off to one of the nearby caves or on-site steam baths. Hot stuff.
Next, take in the hot springs, colourful mountains and green pastures of Landmannalaugar in the southern part of Iceland’s highlands. Trek through the volcanic plateaus and wild meadows of the region with a guided tour, or hop on a bike and roll down the region’s rocky terrains at your leisure.
Landmannalaugar Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Iceland
The highlight of any trip to Hornstrandir in Iceland’s north-western peninsula is the Hornbjarg cliff, at the eastern end of Hornvik bay. Home to one the country’s greatest bird colonies, the cliff is full of fulmars, guillemots and kittiwakes nesting within its nooks and crannies. A photographer’s dream.
Make like Moby Dick and take part in a whale-watching tour from the old habour in Reykjavík. Look out for dolphins, as well as humpback and blue whales playing by the boats, while flocks of puffins flutter overhead. If you’re of a queasy disposition (we’re looking at a certain member of Team Luckies), just make sure you take some travel sickness tablets before you set sail!
Downtown Reykjavik, Iceland
Head to the Skaftafell National Park in Öræfi, southeast Iceland, home of the largest ice cap in Europe. Enclaved by glaciers on three sides, it offers a pretty breathtaking view of the snowy peaks of Hvannadalshnjúkur, the tallest mountain the country standing at 6,200ft high. Instagram ain’t seen nothing yet.
